In the afternoon of August 6, at the south living community of Qinghe Wool Ltd., a man with the family name of Meng quarreled with his wife after getting drunk. To release his anger, he cut an ear of his basset hound dog with a pair of scissors, and threw it at the face of his wife. The man was originally engaged in dog deals, and up to then he was still feeding 7 dogs downstairs at a temporary construction site under horrible conditions. The dog had been screaming day and night miserably due to dire pain. The man rampantly shouted at the surrounding residents and said:"I will be in the upstairs watching, whoever dares to rescue the dog, I will also cut his ears!" As the guy used to be in prison, no one dared to say a word. On the next day, the man claimed to kill and eat another dog, but finally didn’t do it as one of his neighbors begged him not to do so and agreed to offer him some pork.

As it’s in hot summer, the dog’s wounded ear was soon infected and festered. Several volunteers of BHAEEC arrived at the place after they were informed of the issue. They discussed with the man for a long time. Finally his wife agreed they took the wounded dog to hospital and sold the other 5 dogs to them at RMB500. But the man insisted on keeping one last dog for gate keeping purpose.

This is not the end of the story - on August 16, the volunteers were informed that the man killed and ate his last dog……

2006 is the Year of the Dog per Chinese Calendar. We still remember at the beginning of the year, most of the TV channels broadcasted the programs on dogs and their wonderful characters - loyalty, loveliness, intelligence as well as the contribution they have made to the man kind. However, just in this year, we have been inundated with so many animal abusing or killing news: an old man in Shanghai killed a golden retriever which he had fed for 2 years simply because he had never tasted such dog meat; Zhuan Zhuan, the dog in a residential community of Beijing was burned to death; the local government of Mou Ding county, Yun Nan province, slaughtered 55 thousand dogs including 4292 ones being immune only because 3 people were diagnosed of rabies…… Dogs are not the only unlucky ones for the year. In February, a homeless cat named Pang Pang was burned twice in a month, who was later rescued and renamed as Phoenix; A woman tortured and killed a kitten with her high-heel shoes, the video of which was uploaded on a website for people to watch……
