The founder and director of BHAEEC (“the center”), Mme Zhang Luping, is a dedicated animal protectionist, who has been whole-heartedly involved in the animal protection cause in China since 1990. She once was a successful businesswoman in real estates and food & beverage industry. In the early 1990’s, when a normal Chinese people was earning several hundreds of RMB a month, Zhang Luping has earned around RMB10,000,000 from her business, which was rarely seen even in the business circle at that time.

In order to adhere to her dream of creating a world where human beings and animals can live in harmony, she has contributed all her personal fortune of RMB10,000,000 (equivalent to US$1,250,000) to set up the center and to rescue the abused and homeless animals. Zhang Luping and her center have rescued over 1,000 animals so far, among which over 600 dogs and cats are now still living at the center.

During a visit to the center in 2001, Dr. Jane Goodall, one of the world’s leading experts on animal behavior, said: “This is my happiest visit to China because this [center] is one of the few places in the world where the adopted animals are not confined in cages. Here, I have felt people’s respect for life. For everyone who comes here, it is an experience of purification.” Upon her comments, Zhang Luping, a lady with strong will, could not help her tears - the establishment and success of the center stem directly from more than 10 years’ hard effort and struggle by her personally. She wryly recalls how people thought of her as “odd”, but is grateful that, today, many of those same people admire her tenacity, stamina and, above all, courage.

Zhang Luping’s center has become one of the most influential non-governmental organizations for animal protection in the whole country. Her stories have frequently publicized in both domestic and international media. Her center has hosted over 30,000 visiting university students and even kindergarten pupils. She has given lectures to over 100 universities and colleges in Beijing and other cities of China. Zhang Luping has become a well-known name in the universities and colleges not only in Beijing, but in other parts of China as well. When she has been more and more frequently invited to deliver speeches in the universities outside Beijing, sometimes she has to spend a whole day on the way. One time when she went to He Nan University for a lecture, she was late of 4 hours due to the traffic problem. All the students waited at the auditorium eagerly to listen to her speech. When she arrived, she started to deliver the speech without a second of break, and that was one of the most successful lectures she had given.
