The Beginnings

When the SARS virus hit Beijing in the spring of 2003, the center provided sanctuary for more than 150 dogs and cats, mostly deserted by their owners who listened to rumors that pets might be the source of the epidemic. The center worked closely with the Information Office of Beijing Municipal Government and medical research institutes in trying to convince the public to be rational in handling the SARS threat, and not to abandon their pets in face of rumors that had no proven medical statistics or evidence.
Today, more than 600 abandoned dogs and cats, many of which had suffered appalling ill-treatment by owners, are in Zhang Luping’s loving care in what rate as customized luxurious surroundings north of Beijing while they await adoption by responsible new owners. Intending pet-owners have to demonstrate that they offer a good home, and show that they want a cat or dog for the right reasons – as a loyal companion worthy of love and care, not a plaything to be discarded on whim.
